About the walk
This beautiful circular walk begins at the spacious Sheldon Moor lay-by, offering the perfect starting point for an authentic Derbyshire ramble through the heart of the Peak District near Bakewell. Following a network of scenic public footpaths, the trail winds across vibrant rolling fields that showcase the region's iconic countryside. Because these active pastures are home to grazing livestock, keeping your dog on a short lead is essential for their safety, your peace of mind, and the well-being of the farm animals. As you navigate this traditional landscape, you will encounter numerous historic stone stiles. While these dry-stone structures add immense character to the route, some can be quite high, so be prepared to lift or assist your four-legged companion over them along the way.
Descending into the valley, the route introduces you to Lathkill Dale, widely considered one of the prettiest limestone valleys in the Peak District National Park. As a designated Derbyshire Dales National Nature Reserve, the dale is celebrated for its rich biodiversity, including brown trout, dippers, kingfishers, and rare flora like the Jacob’s Ladder flower. Because of this sensitive ecological environment, dogs must be kept on leads and strictly out of the river to protect the fragile habitat. To preserve this pristine beauty for local wildlife and future hikers, please practice Leave No Trace principles and carry all litter back home with you.
The undisputed highlight of this moderate journey awaits near the end of your hike at the historic Magpie Mine. As one of the best-preserved industrial heritage sites in Derbyshire, this 18th-century lead mine features an impressive ruined engine house, a towering chimney, and fascinating remains that offer a captivating glimpse into the Peak District's rich mining history. Located just a few miles apart near Bakewell in the Derbyshire Peak District, Lathkill Dale and Magpie Mine present a fascinating contrast. One is an incredibly beautiful, tranquil national nature reserve, while the other is a stark, atmospheric monument to the area's intense industrial past.
They are deeply connected—both geographically and historically—through the Peak District's unique geology and the stories of 19th-century lead mining.
Lathkill Dale is widely considered one of the finest limestone dales in Britain. It is part of the Derbyshire Dales National Nature Reserve and is famous for its steep cliffs, ancient woodlands, and unique water features.
The Disappearing River: The River Lathkill is a famous "winterbourne" stream. Because the limestone landscape is incredibly porous, the river frequently disappears entirely during dry summer months, leaving a completely dry, rocky riverbed in the upper sections of the dale. In wet weather, it dramatically bursts back to life, rushing straight out of the mouth of Lathkill Head Cave.
The "Purest Stream" in England: In 1653, the famous poet and angler Charles Cotton wrote that the Lathkill was by far the "purest and most transparent stream that I ever saw, either at home or abroad," famous for breeding incredibly vibrant, red-spotted wild trout.
The Blue Waters: In the lower part of the dale near Over Haddon, the river passes over an underground layer of volcanic rock (basalt/toadstone). Because this rock is completely waterproof, it forces the underground water back to the surface, creating stunning, crystal-clear, deep blue pools known locally as "The Blue Waters".
Rare Wildlife and Fossils: The dale is home to Jacob’s Ladder, an incredibly rare wildflower with soft blue petals that blooms in June and July. If you explore Ricklow Quarry at the upper end of the dale, you will find exposed rock faces completely packed with Gigantoproductus fossils—enormous, 350-million-year-old prehistoric sea shells from when the Peak District was a warm, tropical ocean floor.
Perched on the windswept plateau just north of Lathkill Dale near the village of Sheldon, Magpie Mine is the best-preserved 19th-century lead mine in the UK and a Scheduled Monument. It has a legendary, turbulent history.
The "Magpie Murders" of 1833: During the 1820s and 30s, Magpie Mine was locked in a bitter, violent territory war with two neighboring mines (Maypitt and Red Soil) over who owned the lucrative underground lead veins. Miners frequently fought underground and would light fires of tar and straw to smoke their rivals out. In 1833, three Maypitt miners were tragically suffocated to death by these fumes. Twenty-four Magpie miners were put on trial for murder, but all were ultimately acquitted because it was impossible to prove exactly who lit the fatal fire.
The Widows' Curse: Following the trial, the grieving widows of the suffocated Maypitt miners allegedly placed a curse on Magpie Mine. Spookily, despite having some of the richest lead veins in the area, the mine ran into immediate financial ruin, closed in 1835, and famously never made a reliable profit again.
Cornish Innovation: In 1839, the legendary Cornish mining engineer John Taylor took over to revive the mine. He brought Cornish miners with him and introduced groundbreaking safety measures to the Peak District, including safety fuses, iron winding ropes, and rigid shift work. The iconic, ruined Cornish Engine House and circular chimney you see standing today are a direct result of this Cornish influence.
The Last Mine Standing: Lead mining in Derbyshire dates back to before the Roman Empire, but Magpie Mine holds the title of the very last working lead mine in the Derbyshire orefield, finally shutting its operations down for good in 1954.
The biggest problem for Magpie Mine was always underground flooding. To solve this, engineers spent 8 years (from 1873 to 1881) digging a massive 2-kilometer underground drainage tunnel (a sough) from the bottom of the mine's 728-foot shaft all the way to the River Wye.
This massive engineering feat successfully drained the mine (and still discharges 4 to 6 million gallons of water a day!). However, lowering the water table so severely permanently altered the natural hydrology of the area, drawing water away from the surrounding plateau and heavily contributing to why the River Lathkill dries up so dramatically today.
